Galerie Handwerk

English Version

The Galerie Handwerk is a cultural institution administrated by the Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern (Chamber of Trades for Munich and Upper Bavaria). A showcase for Bavarian trades and crafts, the gallery is devoted to conveying to the general public an idea of the outstanding skills of today’s craftsmen and women and the contribution they make to society.

Mounting seven exhibitions a year, the Galerie Handwerk gives the crafts a highly visible presence on the Munich scene. The exhibition topics reflect all the diverse functions of the crafts in culture and society. They range from applied art and artisanry, through the trades and architecture, the maintenance of protected monuments, down to design education and training curricula in the trades. The presentations cover traditional, classic and avant-garde approaches. And they extend beyond regional developments to those taking place on a national and international level. As this implies, the gallery makes a significant contribution to the dissemination and advancement of artisanship worldwide.

In addition to exhibitions, the Galerie Handwerk offers a broad schedule of educational events. These include specialist lecture series held in the Handwerkskammer, workshops on current exhibition topics, and guided tours for school and manual arts classes. The gallery’s efforts to document the cultural accomplishments of artisans on the highest level are reflected in a series of catalogue publications devoted to selected exhibition topics. Over the years, the Galerie Handwerk has developed an increasingly diverse exhibition conception that has sparked public interest in contemporary artisanship and an appreciation of its cultural achievements.
